About the HGPA Scholarship Program
The Houston GPA supports five universities with both annual and endowed scholarships. These scholarships are awarded annually in November. Over the course of the 25+ years during which the Houston GPA has been providing the annual scholarships and with the recent addition of the endowed scholarships, the chapter has provided over $500,000 in scholarships and assisted 250+ students in their academic efforts. The universities supported by the Houston GPA are:
In 2002, the Houston GPA established $25,000 endowed scholarships at each of these universities. The endowed scholarships were increased by $10,000 in 2007. Thus, the endowments presently each have a principal amount in excess of $35,000. Each university handles their endowments differently based upon their regulations and the endowment agreements between the chapter and the university. As a result the proceeds from the endowed scholarships are not uniform across the board but generally the endowed scholarship proceeds are expected to be approximately 4 - 5% of the endowed principal.

The award recipient will be selected under the direction of the Dean of Engineering or appropriate interdisciplinary faculty members at each university based upon the following criteria:
- The award shall be a one-year award. It should be made at the end of the Junior year for use during the Senior year.
- Recipient's overall grade point average for the first three years should be at least a "B" or its equivalent. Preference should be given to those students achieving these marks on essentially a full-time basis.
- Recipient should be a member of the student chapter of a nationally recognized professional engineering society. Consideration should also be given to those demonstrating leadership in such professional activities as well as in student government or other approved university or outside activities.
- Recipient should be a student in a fundamental engineering or scientific field with high interest in production, processing, treating or transmission of gas, and/or products extracted from the gas.
- Special consideration should be given to those with these goals who have had summer work opportunities in gas processing industries, or who have participated or are participating in work/study cooperative program.
- Need should not be a consideration in making the award.
The HGPA Scholarship University Representatives (one for each school) are not active in the selection process as the criteria stipulate the university controls the scholarship selection process utilizing the established criteria. It is the scholarship representative's responsibility to insure that the criteria are followed. The universities handle the distribution of the annual scholarship and the endowed scholarship in a variety of ways. Most designate two recipients, one for the annual scholarship and one for the endowed scholarship.
